The Cowboys torched the value chart for JJ Pegues, taking him 31 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The Adonai Mitchell pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, with Jahdae Barron leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jalon Walker at pick 44 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Quinshon Judkins slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 12 is lovely value for the running back. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Donovan Jackson higher than pick No. 97, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a wide receiver like Savion Williams reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
JJ Pegues at the 149th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A running back of that caliber at pick 171 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in Round 6, Pick 13, with Dont'e Thornton Jr. worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylen Reed in slot 204 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Luke Lachey in pick No. 211 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Donovan Smith in the 239th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reach for Logan Parr in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
