Whoever sat across the table from the Cowboys should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They punted on linebacker, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The cost of the Jackson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 17 they get a featured back at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Amos at slot 44 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Donovan Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Isaiah Bond in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Jordan Phillips higher than the 119th pick, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Cobee Bryant in the 149th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bhayshul Tuten at the 171st overall pick is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They read the board right and Vernon Broughton was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 17. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jaylen Reed is a better player than pick No. 204 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor itch, scratched.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Oronde Gadsden II in pick 211, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Donovan Smith at No. 247 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
