The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Kurtis Rourke, the No. 135 name on the board, in slot 204.

They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. Jordan Hicks gives the group a proven body among the projects. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.1 · Pick 33 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 25
They let Emeka Egbuka come to them and pounced at the 33rd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 32
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Omarion Hampton at Round 2, Pick 12 is the proof. It fills a real need, too.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Trey Amos · CB · rank 51
The board had Trey Amos higher than the 67th pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Demetrius Knight Jr. · LB · rank 58
They robbed the room for Demetrius Knight Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.11 · Pick 149 · Emery Jones Jr. · OT · rank 125
Somehow Emery Jones Jr. was still sitting there in slot 149, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 178
JJ Pegues in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.36 · Pick 174 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 175
No edge and no loss on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 174; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.28 · Pick 204 · Kurtis Rourke · QB · rank 135
You do not let a quarterback like Kurtis Rourke reach No. 204 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.35 · Pick 211 · Connor Colby · OG · rank 176
Connor Colby at Round 6, Pick 35 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.23 · Pick 239 · Jay Higgins · LB · rank 185
Jay Higgins in pick 239 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Jamon Dumas-Johnson · LB · rank 218
They will replay Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 247 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
