The Cowboys bet big and early on Donovan Smith, 95 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
Landing Sanders that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a workhorse for the backfield, and a steal at that.
They read the board right and Derrick Harmon was the payoff at the 44th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A conviction pick on Grey Zabel at the 49th overall pick that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Matthew Golden at pick No. 51 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyleik Williams at No. 74 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on TreVeyon Henderson, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 12. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jihaad Campbell in No. 81, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Luke Kandra at the 85th pick, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Savion Williams a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Donovan Smith in pick 109 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
You do not let a safety like Kevin Winston Jr. reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A big swing on Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 148th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Simeon Barrow Jr. at slot 168 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Cam Skattebo was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 33, and they pounced on premier running back value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cody Simon in Round 5, Pick 36 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Ty Hamilton in No. 186 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Raheim Sanders in pick No. 209 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Jaishawn Barham at slot 248 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
