Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys won the night they stopped Smith from sliding. Grade: A-.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Brashard Smith, the No. 108 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 184th overall pick. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.

Reaching for Mertz left real value on the table behind him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.16 · Pick 16 · Ashton Jeanty · RB · rank 2
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get an every-down engine for the run game, outstanding value to boot.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 31
Tate Ratledge at No. 44 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 28
Emeka Egbuka in the 47th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.21 · Pick 122 · Kevin Winston Jr. · S · rank 92
You do not let a safety like Kevin Winston Jr. reach the Round 4 slot and blink. They did not. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.10 · Pick 148 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 83
Barrett Carter at the 148th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.17 · Pick 155 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 175
A swing that ignored the value entirely, JJ Pegues well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.30 · Pick 168 · Chandler Rivers · CB · rank 184
A premium they did not need to pay, Chandler Rivers a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.32 · Pick 170 · Harold Perkins Jr. · LB · rank 126
They will replay Harold Perkins Jr. at pick 170 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · Lathan Ransom · S · rank 107
Taking Lathan Ransom in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R6.9 · Pick 184 · Brashard Smith · RB · rank 108
Somehow Brashard Smith was still sitting there in pick 184, and they pounced on premier running back value. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · Lander Barton · LB · rank 127
Lander Barton in the 189th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Elijah Arroyo · TE · rank 181
The board fumbled Elijah Arroyo all the way to No. 209, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.34 · Pick 248 · Graham Mertz · QB · rank 301
Graham Mertz in slot 248 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
