Washington Commanders

A sensible, unshowy class lands the Commanders a B-.

The Commanders clearly saw something nobody else did in Payton Thorne, taking him 466 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

Getting Harris where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.4 · Pick 36 · Zach Calzada · QB · rank 498
Zach Calzada at the 36th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Payton Thorne · QB · rank 505
Payton Thorne in No. 39 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 49
Cooper Beebe slid further than he should have, and pick 59 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 54
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Cooper DeJean for less than the market said. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 68
Nothing to complain about; Chris Braswell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 80
No edge and no loss on Amarius Mims in the 75th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 100
Graham Barton at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Tyleik Williams · DT · rank 108
A straight-up fair deal on Tyleik Williams at the 101st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.11 · Pick 111 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 128
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 111 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 140
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in slot 133, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.8 · Pick 144 · Gabe Hall · DL · rank 174
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabe Hall in the 144th pick, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 172
Cam Hart at No. 185 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Tre Harris · WR · rank 192
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tre Harris in Round 7, Pick 8, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
