The trade table was where it all came apart. The Cowboys shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Put together, it is a D.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They will need Ford to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Worthy at the 56th pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Benson this early at pick No. 68. It fills a real need, too.
A reach on Khyree Jackson in No. 87; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach for Jordan Jefferson in the 174th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Jaylan Ford in Round 6, Pick 5 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Andrew Raym at pick 216 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Andrew Raym in Round 7, Pick 13 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Whittington in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
