Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent Round 5, Pick 37 on Isaiah Neyor, a name the board had a full 60 spots lower.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will answer for taking S-EDGE early while tight end went begging.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Proctor steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jonathon Brooks at the 56th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Michael Pratt in Round 3, Pick 10 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Khyree Jackson at pick 87, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good price on Matt Goncalves in pick No. 113, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A surprising call. With tight end still to address, they spent slot 125 on Jalyx Hunt, a S-EDGE they were not short of.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Keith Randolph Jr. this early at Round 4, Pick 33. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reach on Braelon Allen in pick No. 142; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jordan Jefferson at the 147th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ty'Ron Hopper. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Isaiah Neyor at pick 173 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Myles Jones at No. 210 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Josh Proctor slipping to the Round 6 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A real head-scratcher, Eric Gentry in the 242nd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
