The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
The Powers-Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 8 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Xavier Worthy at par in the 43rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No drama and no debate, Jonathon Brooks went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Michael Pratt in No. 87 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Khyree Jackson at the 104th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A conviction pick on Javon Foster at pick 115 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cole Bishop at slot 125 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Cedric Gray in pick 133 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Keith Randolph Jr. at the 152nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No edge and no loss on Braelon Allen in slot 158; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid a round early for Jordan Jefferson in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Brandon Coleman in the 173rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Myles Jones at Round 6, Pick 38 is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Isaiah Neyor slipping to pick No. 242 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
