Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Michael Pratt in slot 87.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The McGlothern pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
No edge and no loss on Rome Odunze in the 7th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a building block for the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.25 · Pick 25 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 32
In pick No. 25 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 55
Xavier Worthy at slot 56 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
A premium they did not need to pay, Trey Benson a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Michael Pratt · QB · rank 140
Michael Pratt at No. 87 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 125
Johnny Wilson in slot 106 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
A reach for Tommy Eichenberg in the 136th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.10 · Pick 146 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 183
Jordan Jefferson at the 146th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
Value with a capital V on Dwight McGlothern in Round 5, Pick 38, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Khristian Boyd · DL-EDGE · rank 178
Khristian Boyd at the Round 6 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 212
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 216 with a little surplus value in Nathaniel Watson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 261
Ryan Watts in No. 233 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · Rasheen Ali · RB · rank 259
Rasheen Ali at pick 244 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
