The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Wyatt Milum, the No. 35 name on the board, in pick No. 249. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge. More want than need.
In the 12th pick they get a lead back with juice at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Tyler Warren in pick No. 44, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Kenneth Grant reach No. 73 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 76 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Will Howard at pick 107 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tre Harris at Round 5, Pick 11 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jonah Monheim in the 170th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jake Majors at pick No. 172 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Walter Nolen in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Savion Williams in Round 6, Pick 12 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ajani Cornelius in No. 211 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Wyatt Milum still on the board at the 249th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
