The Cowboys did not so much draft Drake Nugent as overpay for him, 36 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Cowboys paired the rookies with proven help, Sean Murphy-Bunting leading the way.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for Braden Fiske in pick 56, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Javon Foster in the 122nd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Drake Nugent at the 175th overall pick, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Fair-plus on Nathaniel Watson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A real head-scratcher, Solomon Byrd in slot 233 is miles ahead of his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalen Coker. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
