Nobody had Caedan Wallace this high, and it is not close. The Giants reached 55 spots to get him at the 158th overall pick. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Everything downstream of Jayden Daniels depends on Jayden Daniels, and the building knows it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Melton.
The Giants clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 10 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
In pick 15 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 17th pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 22nd overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
They will replay Cooper DeJean at slot 46 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Xavier Worthy in pick No. 56 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good price on Kiran Amegadjie in the 70th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They robbed the room for Junior Colson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor itch, scratched.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in slot 87 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trey Benson at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Gabriel Murphy went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 36; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Cole Bishop in the 100th pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Zak Zinter in No. 101 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They liked Theo Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 119 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Davis went about where he belonged in the 120th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Anthony Gould at par in slot 141, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Caedan Wallace in Round 5, Pick 22 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steele Chambers at the 179th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A quiet steal in pick 183: Kamal Hadden for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had AJ Barner higher than No. 184, and the tight end fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reach for Joe Milton III in the 185th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
