Some picks age like wine; Devin Leary at Round 6, Pick 44 will need to, sitting 72 spots clear of his grade. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. However the rest shakes out, Johnson at that price is a win they earned. They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 10 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
In slot 16 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chris Braswell. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Max Melton at No. 62 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Blake Fisher in pick No. 70; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Austin Booker in the 72nd pick; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Calen Bullock at pick No. 81 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 23: Cooper Beebe for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Xavier Legette slipping to the 89th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kris Abrams-Draine at No. 93 is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Marshawn Kneeland, who had no business lasting to pick 101. A need, and now a little less of one.
A safety of that caliber at slot 103 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Trey Benson at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Matt Goncalves at Round 4, Pick 26 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cedric Gray in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Good price on Johnny Wilson in pick No. 131, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They talked themselves into Caedan Wallace at No. 139, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ben Sinnott slid further than he should have, and slot 145 is lovely value for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Steal is underselling it; Mason McCormick at the 183rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Isaiah Davis in the 184th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Steele Chambers went about where he belonged in pick 185. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Josh Proctor in the 187th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Javontae Jean-Baptiste in pick No. 196, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Devin Leary at slot 219, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Isaiah Williams at the 235th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a wide receiver like Cornelius Johnson reach No. 252 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Myles Murphy all the way to Round 7, Pick 33, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 254 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Anim Dankwah in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
