New York Giants

Larceny in No. 161 lands the Giants a D+, Shipley and all.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Giants spent the 140th pick on Caedan Wallace, a name the board had a full 40 spots lower.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. On value alone, Shipley makes the weekend a net positive.

The Giants clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.18 · Pick 18 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 14
In pick No. 18 they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 12
Jer'Zhan Newton at pick 33 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Bo Nix · QB · rank 31
Good price on Bo Nix in the 37th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 23
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 39 is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 15
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 42 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
A straight-up fair deal on J.J. McCarthy at pick 47, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 54
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Malachi Corley at Round 3, Pick 1. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 36
Keon Coleman in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 43
Payton Wilson at slot 70 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 59
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 71st overall pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 60
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Javon Bullard in pick No. 72. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.9 · Pick 73 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 62
Christian Haynes in the 73rd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Max Melton · CB · rank 63
Max Melton slipping to pick 74 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 65
A slide stopped in No. 75, with Kiran Amegadjie worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 79
Jaylen Wright in the 79th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 85
Cade Stover at slot 89 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 74
Somehow Xavier Legette was still sitting there in the 96th overall pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.34 · Pick 97 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 78
Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 3 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 104
Zak Zinter at pick No. 98 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 88
Gabriel Murphy slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 36 is lovely value for the edge rusher. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 110
A premium they did not need to pay, Cole Bishop a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Marshawn Kneeland · DE-EDGE · rank 90
Marshawn Kneeland is a better player than No. 105 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 113
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in the 106th pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 105
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 110 with a little surplus value in MarShawn Lloyd. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.11 · Pick 111 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 136
A big swing on Theo Johnson at pick 111, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
R4.18 · Pick 118 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 111
Fair-plus on Isaac Guerendo, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Jalen McMillan · WR · rank 101
Jalen McMillan at the 120th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.21 · Pick 121 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 92
Taking Caelen Carson in Round 4, Pick 21 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Anthony Gould · WR · rank 166
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Anthony Gould. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Caedan Wallace · OT · rank 180
They reached a country mile for Caedan Wallace at pick No. 140, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.6 · Pick 142 · Sataoa Laumea · OT · rank 117
Steal is underselling it; Sataoa Laumea at the 142nd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.9 · Pick 145 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 146
By-the-book stuff, Roger Rosengarten at No. 145 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 116
Circle this one: Javon Solomon at pick 157 is a fall that decides a draft. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 108
The board fumbled Will Shipley all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 172
They went early on Walter Rouse in the 163rd pick, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Cody Schrader · RB · rank 155
A tidy bit of business in Round 5, Pick 30, where Cody Schrader graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 167
Kamal Hadden at pick 180 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 177
Nothing to complain about; Ty'Ron Hopper went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 174
A quiet steal in No. 183: Layden Robinson for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.22 · Pick 197 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 165
They barely believed it either: Luke McCaffrey still on the board at the 197th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
