The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Giants watched Dominick Puni slide 84 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman.
Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 16 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A real need, handled.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 7 with a little surplus value in Xavier Legette. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. The roster fit checks out.
J.J. McCarthy in No. 41 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at the 70th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Brandon Dorlus in pick No. 74 lands just on the right side of the ledger. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Christian Haynes at slot 78 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Roman Wilson in the 116th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A running back of that caliber at pick 141 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
They barely believed it either: Dominick Puni still on the board at the 185th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Sataoa Laumea was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 11, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Edefuan Ulofoshio at No. 187 is a fall that decides a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board had Trey Knox higher than the Round 6 slot, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
Joshua Cephus at the 252nd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
