When a board-topper like Jaylin Simpson slides to Round 6, Pick 39, you do not overthink it, and the Giants did not. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Bo Nix is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Every board in the league had Milton III lower, and that gap is the story.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick 18 they get a true top target, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 23 they get a problem off the edge, outstanding value to boot.
No drama and no debate, Bo Nix went about where he belonged in No. 32. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Jer'Zhan Newton reach pick No. 49 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Laiatu Latu in the 70th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cole Bishop in pick 106 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Audric Estime at Round 5, Pick 5 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kitan Oladapo in the 146th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Joe Milton III at pick No. 183 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaylin Simpson at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: M.J. Devonshire still on the board at the 221st pick. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Steele Chambers was still sitting there in slot 222, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Magee went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
No edge and no loss on Trey Knox in the 224th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Gabe Hall at No. 227 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on KT Leveston at pick 229 that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Cornelius Johnson at pick 237 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tahj Washington at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
