The tape said wait; the Giants did not. Caedan Wallace went at Round 5, Pick 21, a good 56 picks before the board was ready.
Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
That Murphy pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 16 they get a passer to set the clock by at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
In the 17th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Brian Thomas Jr. in Round 1, Pick 26 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
They will replay Graham Barton at the 47th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Fair-plus on Kris Jenkins, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Cade Stover went about where he belonged in pick No. 70. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Amarius Mims at the 73rd pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had Austin Booker higher than slot 94, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
The board fumbled Max Melton all the way to Round 3, Pick 32, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cole Bishop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brenden Rice at the Round 4 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Theo Johnson in pick 108, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Caelen Carson in No. 109 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kitan Oladapo at the 128th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Isaac Guerendo in pick 129, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid up for Anthony Gould at pick No. 134 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Kamal Hadden at Round 5, Pick 5, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Gabriel Murphy still on the board at slot 144. It fills a real need, too.
Brennan Jackson in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into Steele Chambers at the 153rd pick, and the board did not agree. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A real head-scratcher, Caedan Wallace in No. 157 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Davis at slot 158, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trente Jones. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Mohamed Kamara at Round 5, Pick 31 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Walter Rouse at the Round 6 slot is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They let AJ Barner come to them and pounced at the 179th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. at pick No. 183 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Fabien Lovett in pick 214 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ty'Ron Hopper at No. 220 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Jordan Jefferson in pick No. 221 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jordan Magee at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Johnny Dixon in pick 227, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 229 is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Anim Dankwah at No. 242 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
