The Giants put a flag in the ground for Caedan Wallace, 42 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
Everything downstream of Michael Penix Jr. depends on Michael Penix Jr., and the building knows it. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Landing Wilson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick 20 they get a mismatch in the passing game, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 25 they get the face of the franchise, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bo Nix in No. 47. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value with a capital V on Adonai Mitchell in pick No. 48, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A quiet steal in the 87th pick: Renardo Green for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson went about where he belonged in pick 88. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Trey Benson, who had no business lasting to pick No. 98. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Fair-plus on Gabriel Murphy, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Caelen Carson at No. 100 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Theo Johnson this early at the 101st pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They did well to land Zak Zinter in the 109th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Blake Fisher in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Cedric Gray here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.

A straight-up fair deal on Kamal Hadden at pick 161, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Caedan Wallace well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Trente Jones in Round 6, Pick 3; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ty'Ron Hopper in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
AJ Barner at the 183rd pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Fabien Lovett in slot 184, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reasonable price with a little left over, M.J. Devonshire in pick No. 198. The roster fit checks out.
Gabe Hall at the 203rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ryan Flournoy at the 207th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A conviction pick on Jordan Magee at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
KT Leveston at No. 221 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
