You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Giants did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Laube at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Safety is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 8 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Terrion Arnold slid further than he should have, and pick 34 is lovely value for the cornerback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Troy Fautanu at the 39th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Troy Franklin at Round 2, Pick 15 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Tyler Nubin at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
J.J. McCarthy in No. 70 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Brenden Rice still on the board at the 96th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Mike Sainristil in slot 97 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Ray Davis at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kris Abrams-Draine at the 140th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Sataoa Laumea all the way to pick 142, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Dylan Laube in No. 185 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
They took Jared Wiley at par in pick No. 201, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Omar Speights in Round 7, Pick 7 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
