The Giants spent real capital to be 56 picks early on Trey Knox, and the board is going to hold them to it. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They banked enough surplus on Phillips to cover a lot of smaller sins. They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
Fair-plus on Caleb Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy bit of business in slot 47, where Bo Nix graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Xavier Legette at Round 3, Pick 6 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A safety of that caliber at No. 75 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
T.J. Tampa in pick No. 79 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Renardo Green at slot 107 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value with a capital V on Zak Zinter in Round 4, Pick 22, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Steal is underselling it; Andru Phillips at the 167th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Will Shipley in pick 183, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
