Somebody in pick No. 184 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Giants sat still while Will Shipley, the No. 107 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every board in the league had Wallace lower, and that gap is the story. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Michael Penix Jr. is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st pick they get the arm they will build around, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
In pick 22 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 26th overall pick they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They will replay Cooper DeJean at slot 45 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Kool-Aid McKinstry was still sitting there in pick No. 47, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It fills a real need, too.
Roman Wilson in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malachi Corley. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Xavier Worthy in the 57th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Cade Stover in No. 70, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Renardo Green at Round 3, Pick 17 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Javon Bullard all the way to Round 3, Pick 19, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They jumped the gun on Theo Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Davis at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cole Bishop at slot 115 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Audric Estime slipping to the 120th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nice patience on Isaac Guerendo, who had no business lasting to No. 141. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Andru Phillips at the 158th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Fabien Lovett at pick No. 161, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Steele Chambers at pick 171, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Caedan Wallace at Round 5, Pick 36 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach for Trente Jones in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A running back of that caliber at No. 184 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Gabe Hall. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
