This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Troy Fautanu, the No. 28 name on the board, stolen at the 88th pick. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will need Thomas to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake. The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 6 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jayden Daniels at pick 40 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
You do not let a cornerback like Cooper DeJean reach Round 2, Pick 15 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Tyler Nubin still on the board at the 49th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Troy Fautanu in slot 88 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Trey Benson slipping to No. 89 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Johnny Wilson in the 90th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Ricky Pearsall at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 107 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach for Darius Robinson in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, DeWayne Carter at Round 4, Pick 15. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Good price on Kris Abrams-Draine in slot 125, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled Jacob Cowing all the way to pick 126, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at the 143rd pick, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Ty'Ron Hopper here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Javion Cohen in the 185th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Brevyn Spann-Ford in the 219th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Xavier Thomas well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Jawhar Jordan at pick No. 238 for years; that is how good the value is. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
