There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Giants started one anyway for Caedan Wallace, 56 picks ahead of schedule. Put together, it is a D.
Carson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
Rome Odunze slid further than he should have, and Round 1, Pick 17 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
In slot 23 they get a potential shutdown corner. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 24 they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Jonathon Brooks in pick 47, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Edgerrin Cooper in the 70th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Cade Stover at No. 81 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. A need, and now a little less of one.
Renardo Green at slot 83 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Max Melton slipping to pick No. 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaylen Wright at the 102nd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They liked Blake Fisher enough to skip the value, taking him in the 107th overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid up for Spencer Rattler at pick 108 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Theo Johnson at Round 4, Pick 14 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good price on Javon Solomon in pick 120, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
Kitan Oladapo at Round 4, Pick 26 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jalen McMillan in pick No. 129 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fabien Lovett at the 141st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for Caedan Wallace at slot 157, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nothing to complain about; Tyrone Tracy Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Kamal Hadden at No. 161 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Steele Chambers in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They went early on Ty'Ron Hopper in the Round 5 slot, and the value did not follow. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Somehow Caelen Carson was still sitting there in the 172nd pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gabe Hall well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Joe Milton III at pick 177, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at the 183rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Walter Rouse at Round 6, Pick 9 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
M.J. Devonshire in slot 187 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Jordan Magee in No. 197 says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
No drama and no debate, Myles Cole went about where he belonged in the 198th pick. The roster fit checks out.
