New York Giants

The Giants bet the future on McCarthy. The board says D.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Giants started one anyway for Caedan Wallace, 56 picks ahead of schedule. Put together, it is a D.

Carson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
Rome Odunze slid further than he should have, and Round 1, Pick 17 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 26
In slot 23 they get a potential shutdown corner. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 27
In pick No. 24 they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.25 · Pick 25 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Jonathon Brooks · RB · rank 48
They paid sticker price for Jonathon Brooks in pick 47, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
Edgerrin Cooper in the 70th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.17 · Pick 81 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
Cade Stover at No. 81 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Renardo Green · S · rank 78
Renardo Green at slot 83 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 86
A straight-up fair deal on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
Max Melton slipping to pick No. 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 71
Jaylen Wright at the 102nd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 118
They liked Blake Fisher enough to skip the value, taking him in the 107th overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 117
They paid up for Spencer Rattler at pick 108 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
Theo Johnson at Round 4, Pick 14 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 116
Good price on Javon Solomon in pick 120, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 154
Kitan Oladapo at Round 4, Pick 26 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Jalen McMillan · WR · rank 99
Jalen McMillan in pick No. 129 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 184
Fabien Lovett at the 141st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Caedan Wallace · OT · rank 213
They reached a country mile for Caedan Wallace at slot 157, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Tyrone Tracy Jr. · WR · rank 153
Nothing to complain about; Tyrone Tracy Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 168
By-the-book stuff, Kamal Hadden at No. 161 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Steele Chambers · LB · rank 199
Steele Chambers in the Round 5 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R5.35 · Pick 171 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 181
They went early on Ty'Ron Hopper in the Round 5 slot, and the value did not follow. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 94
Somehow Caelen Carson was still sitting there in the 172nd pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Gabe Hall · DL · rank 221
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gabe Hall well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
A big swing on Joe Milton III at pick 177, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at the 183rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.9 · Pick 184 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 163
Circle this one: Walter Rouse at Round 6, Pick 9 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.12 · Pick 187 · M.J. Devonshire · CB · rank 191
M.J. Devonshire in slot 187 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.22 · Pick 197 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 222
Value said wait; Jordan Magee in No. 197 says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R6.23 · Pick 198 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 197
No drama and no debate, Myles Cole went about where he belonged in the 198th pick. The roster fit checks out.
