The tape said wait; the Giants did not. Steele Chambers went at the 140th overall pick, a good 51 picks before the board was ready.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Bo Nix is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Pearsall value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The Giants clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 10 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In No. 11 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick No. 14 they get a double-digit-sack hope. A real need, handled.
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Nate Wiggins in pick 21. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
In the 22nd overall pick they get a franchise quarterback, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 33rd pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Terrion Arnold slipping to pick No. 39 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nice patience on Troy Fautanu, who had no business lasting to slot 43. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 15 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nothing to complain about; J.J. McCarthy went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Xavier Worthy slid further than he should have, and pick 70 is lovely value for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach on Austin Booker in No. 72; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Kiran Amegadjie here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in pick No. 90: Cooper Beebe for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at Round 3, Pick 28. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Blake Corum in slot 92 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Ricky Pearsall in the 93rd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Gabriel Murphy in No. 94 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach for Cole Bishop in the 95th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 97 with a little surplus value in Dominick Puni. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Patrick Paul at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
MarShawn Lloyd in No. 102 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Renardo Green went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 8. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Leonard Taylor III in the 112th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into AJ Barner at the 123rd pick, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Brenden Rice in pick 129 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
