The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Giants reached some 96 spots for Caedan Wallace, and value like that does not grow back. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Phillips falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th overall pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
In slot 14 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A tidy little value on Tyler Nubin in pick No. 47, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Troy Franklin still on the board at pick 53. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Kris Jenkins come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Renardo Green in No. 70 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Adisa Isaac in No. 71, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 77 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor itch, scratched.
Max Melton at the 96th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Dadrion Taylor-Demerson worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, MarShawn Lloyd at slot 99 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach on Theo Johnson in pick 112; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Brenden Rice all the way to Round 4, Pick 14, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Khyree Jackson in the 115th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Caedan Wallace in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cedric Gray in the 120th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Circle this one: Mike Sainristil at pick No. 121 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Fabien Lovett in Round 4, Pick 22 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Matt Goncalves slid further than he should have, and pick 127 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kitan Oladapo at the 141st pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Ben Sinnott higher than slot 143, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a wide receiver like Johnny Wilson reach No. 149 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Andru Phillips at slot 153 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Mohamed Kamara here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Justin Eboigbe slipping to pick 161 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Trente Jones at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Jordan Travis was still sitting there in pick No. 196, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ty'Ron Hopper at Round 6, Pick 22 is the proof. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Johnny Dixon in the 209th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Myles Cole in No. 210 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
