It is the swing that defines the weekend: Anim Dankwah in the 226th overall pick, a good 49 spots before the room expected him.
Burton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 8 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
In the 14th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
JC Latham in Round 1, Pick 16 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick No. 39 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Fair-plus on Darius Robinson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyler Nubin in the 47th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Roman Wilson in the 71st pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Junior Colson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
T.J. Tampa at Round 3, Pick 9 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Braden Fiske at the 74th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Adisa Isaac at No. 75 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Malachi Corley in pick 76 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
DJ James in pick No. 108 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Jermaine Burton at the Round 4 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Sataoa Laumea at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Javon Foster in pick No. 123, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Javon Bullard still on the board at the 124th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Spencer Rattler at slot 137 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value said wait; Kamal Hadden in No. 140 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nice patience on Xavier Thomas, who had no business lasting to the 167th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow James Williams was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 10, and they pounced on premier safety value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Josh Newton at pick 186 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in slot 190, where Caedan Wallace graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Anim Dankwah in Round 7, Pick 6 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jaylan Ford in the 230th overall pick, plain and simple. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
