You could see the war room lean forward. Bo Nix at the 108th pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. They will need Knox to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Troy Franklin was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 5. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Quinyon Mitchell slipping to the 39th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They let Chop Robinson come to them and pounced at the 47th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
J.J. McCarthy at slot 48 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. The roster fit checks out.
Brenden Rice in No. 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Johnny Wilson at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Bo Nix at pick 108 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Mike Sainristil at pick No. 109 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Zak Zinter in pick No. 115 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
MarShawn Lloyd at No. 130 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Sataoa Laumea at the 140th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy bit of business in pick 145, where Cedric Gray graded well above the range. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
James Williams in the 157th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kamal Hadden at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylen Wright at slot 167 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Joe Milton III at Round 5, Pick 33 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Trey Knox at pick No. 174 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board fumbled Braelon Allen all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
