Somebody in No. 249 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Giants sat still while Mason McCormick, the No. 159 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
They will need Schrader to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 13 they get juice off the edge. A real need, handled.
Nice patience on Taliese Fuaga, who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 1. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Michael Penix Jr. at No. 39 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They read the board right and Terrion Arnold was the payoff at pick No. 40. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had Bo Nix higher than the 41st pick, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Amarius Mims in the 47th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Xavier Worthy slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at slot 88 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Max Melton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at Round 3, Pick 27 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Renardo Green at pick No. 92 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on DeWayne Carter, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jonah Elliss in the 95th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Brenden Rice in No. 97; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Kiran Amegadjie in pick 99 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach for Javon Solomon in the 102nd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
They barely believed it either: Khyree Jackson still on the board at pick No. 108. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Theo Johnson at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had cheaper options than Ben Sinnott at slot 124, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
Cedric Gray in the 127th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cody Schrader this early at Round 4, Pick 28. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Brennan Jackson at No. 129 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Fabien Lovett at the 140th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Anthony Gould went about where he belonged in slot 163. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Caedan Wallace. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Joe Milton III a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
You do not let a cornerback like Kamal Hadden reach Round 6, Pick 38 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Mohamed Kamara at No. 214 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Layden Robinson at the 215th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, AJ Barner in pick 217, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Steele Chambers was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Steal is underselling it; Mason McCormick at No. 249 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
