The Giants clearly saw something nobody else did in Tanner McLachlan, taking him 101 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Haynesworth falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
The veteran additions, Baker Mayfield chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a home-run threat at receiver, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Rome Odunze in the Round 2 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a cornerback like Nate Wiggins reach No. 47 and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Tyler Nubin here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Mohamed Kamara at the 108th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Ray Davis all the way to the 140th pick, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. in Round 5, Pick 9 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid a round early for Joe Milton III in slot 157, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Rasheen Ali in the 185th overall pick says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Roger Rosengarten, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Christian Jones at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, Jared Wiley in pick No. 188 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Tanner McLachlan in pick 189, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Braiden McGregor at No. 199 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A linebacker of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Curtis Jacobs at pick 222 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Nathan Thomas at slot 224 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Sam Hartman at No. 226 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Steal is underselling it; Javon Baker at pick No. 227 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jontrey Hunter in the 239th pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Xavier Thomas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It fills a real need, too.
Brian Ugwu slipping to the 244th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
Sincere Haynesworth at slot 253 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
