New York Giants

A passer of the future in McCarthy, and a D-, for the Giants.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Giants shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.

J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The cost of the Jones reach is exactly the players who went right after him. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Guerendo.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.18 · Pick 18 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 18
In pick 18 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.20 · Pick 20 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future, though they paid up to get him.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 27
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.32 · Pick 32 · Bo Nix · QB · rank 30
No edge and no loss on Bo Nix in the 32nd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 55
A premium they did not need to pay, Xavier Worthy a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 60
A conviction pick on Malachi Corley at slot 49 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 23
They barely believed it either: Kool-Aid McKinstry still on the board at No. 62. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 47
They will replay Cooper Beebe at pick No. 70 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.9 · Pick 73 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
Taking Edgerrin Cooper in the 73rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.10 · Pick 74 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 50
Kris Jenkins in pick No. 74 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 71
They did well to land Jaylen Wright in slot 75, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Austin Booker · DE-EDGE · rank 77
They took Austin Booker at par in Round 3, Pick 12, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Renardo Green · S · rank 78
By-the-book stuff, Renardo Green at pick 77 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Jermaine Burton · WR · rank 56
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 78th pick is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 86
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.16 · Pick 80 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 81
Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Michael Hall Jr. · DT · rank 82
Nothing to complain about; Michael Hall Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
They robbed the room for Trey Benson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
They paid up for Theo Johnson at pick 108 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.20 · Pick 120 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 83
Calen Bullock in the 120th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
Circle this one: Zak Zinter at pick No. 129 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 118
Value with a capital V on Blake Fisher in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Brennan Jackson · DE-EDGE · rank 155
Brennan Jackson at slot 138 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 154
Kitan Oladapo at Round 5, Pick 5 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 184
A real head-scratcher, Fabien Lovett in pick 161 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 194
They reached a country mile for Trente Jones at the 169th overall pick, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.35 · Pick 171 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 128
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Isaac Guerendo in No. 171, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 168
Kamal Hadden at pick No. 172 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
They paid a round early for Joe Milton III in Round 6, Pick 8, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
