Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Giants spent pick No. 75 on Renardo Green, a name the board had a full 37 spots lower. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They banked enough surplus on Devonshire to cover a lot of smaller sins. The Giants indulged a want in Wilson while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Somehow Terrion Arnold was still sitting there in the 42nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in No. 47, where Bo Nix graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Edgerrin Cooper at slot 70 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman to take Payton Wilson, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Keon Coleman at pick 72 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Jeremiah Trotter Jr. while clear needs at interior defensive lineman sat open.
They read the board right and Christian Haynes was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Renardo Green at the 75th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cole Bishop at pick No. 79 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cooper Beebe in the 95th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Austin Booker in pick No. 96 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Marshawn Kneeland at No. 99. The roster fit checks out.
They took MarShawn Lloyd at par in pick 104, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Isaac Guerendo in the 107th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Theo Johnson in Round 5, Pick 2 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Javon Solomon in the 141st pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Steal is underselling it; Johnny Wilson at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Steele Chambers at slot 159 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
No edge and no loss on Walter Rouse in pick 171; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Anthony Gould in No. 172. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kamal Hadden in slot 173 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Joe Milton III at the 174th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Justin Eboigbe in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jalyx Hunt at Round 6, Pick 38 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
A straight-up fair deal on Javontae Jean-Baptiste at the 224th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Trey Knox at pick No. 233 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, M.J. Devonshire in No. 238, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Anim Dankwah in pick No. 244 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
