Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Luke McCaffrey got past him. The Giants do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 242.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
Marvin Harrison Jr. in No. 6 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In pick 7 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
Cooper DeJean at the 47th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 6: T.J. Tampa for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They will replay Jaden Hicks at No. 106 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nice patience on Zak Zinter, who had no business lasting to slot 119. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Caedan Wallace slipping to pick No. 146 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Will Shipley all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Kitan Oladapo was still sitting there in the 178th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Michael Pratt in pick 183 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Rouse in slot 195, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Luke McCaffrey in the 242nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: KT Leveston still on the board at the 252nd pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
