You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Giants did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
Wright has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Fautanu. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Nubin at the 32nd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quinyon Mitchell is a better player than the 39th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, JC Latham in Round 2, Pick 15, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Kamari Lassiter at slot 48 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Xavier Worthy went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
J.J. McCarthy in No. 50 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kris Jenkins at the 53rd overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Ja'Tavion Sanders. A need, and now a little less of one.
Johnny Wilson in the 70th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Troy Fautanu at pick No. 80 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Marist Liufau went about where he belonged in slot 81. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Marshawn Kneeland at No. 86 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Ruke Orhorhoro at pick 108 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylen Wright. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Tommy Eichenberg in the 155th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They paid a round early for Joe Milton III in Round 5, Pick 20, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Ben Sinnott at pick 157 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nehemiah Pritchett at pick No. 166 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Luke McCaffrey in No. 179 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jaheim Bell at the 185th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A real head-scratcher, Rasheen Ali in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Proctor. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They went early on Gabe Hall in pick 202, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
LaDarius Henderson in the 206th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Taulia Tagovailoa at the 246th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
