Call it larceny. Joe Alt sat on the board until pick 70, and the Giants did not need to be asked twice.
Jayden Daniels is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will need Wallace to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
The Giants indulged a want in Trotter Jr. while a need in interior defensive lineman stayed open. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
In No. 10 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 14th pick they get a No. 1 receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 16 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Quinyon Mitchell in Round 1, Pick 18 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Terrion Arnold at the 43rd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Chop Robinson at pick 45 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Joe Alt in No. 70 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Kool-Aid McKinstry still on the board at slot 72. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Renardo Green at the 73rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid up for Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the 76th pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Payton Wilson in pick No. 77 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 14: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. adds a linebacker while interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Taliese Fuaga at No. 80 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Xavier Worthy in pick 106 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Kiran Amegadjie in slot 107, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cole Bishop at the 108th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
MarShawn Lloyd in the 122nd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They robbed the room for Ray Davis here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
Anthony Gould at pick 143 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a running back like Isaac Guerendo reach pick No. 146 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Blake Fisher at Round 5, Pick 14 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Kitan Oladapo all the way to No. 182, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Caedan Wallace at slot 183, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Joe Milton III at Round 6, Pick 10 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Erick All at the Round 6 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
