The tape said wait; the Giants did not. Caedan Wallace went at slot 167, a good 46 picks before the board was ready.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Landing Jackson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
The Giants paired the rookies with proven help, Jermaine Eluemunor leading the way.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a long-term answer under center at a price that makes it sweeter.
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Taliese Fuaga slipping to pick No. 33 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in the 35th pick, where Chop Robinson graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ja'Tavion Sanders slid further than he should have, and No. 44 is lovely value for the tight end. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Graham Barton still on the board at the 46th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at the 49th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Braden Fiske in pick 50 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Malachi Corley at slot 53 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Renardo Green at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Max Melton at par in Round 3, Pick 16, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in pick No. 87, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A quiet steal in the 88th overall pick: Cade Stover for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Blake Corum at No. 93 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid up for Cole Bishop at Round 3, Pick 35 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A edge rusher of that caliber at slot 103 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Calen Bullock in pick No. 112 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Khyree Jackson in the 119th overall pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Fair-plus on Javon Solomon, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tyler Davis at the Round 4 slot is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Johnny Wilson in No. 130 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Theo Johnson, who had no business lasting to slot 141. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Anthony Gould in pick 142 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Justin Eboigbe at pick No. 148, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kamal Hadden a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Brennan Jackson in the 155th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steele Chambers in the 161st overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
