It is the swing that defines the weekend: Xavier Thomas in the Round 6 slot, a good 63 spots before the room expected him.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Newton. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Adding Marvin Mims Jr. by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Troy Fautanu at the 39th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Terrion Arnold at Round 2, Pick 10 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay T.J. Tampa at pick 59 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Troy Franklin in pick No. 70 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They let Jonathon Brooks come to them and pounced at the 71st pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Javon Bullard here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking Brenden Rice in the 89th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Mike Sainristil was still sitting there in the 108th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It fills a real need, too.
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Dominick Puni for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Josh Newton at No. 140 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jordan Travis in pick No. 165 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Joe Milton III at Round 5, Pick 30 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Roger Rosengarten in slot 185 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Xavier Thomas in pick 204, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jordan Magee slipping to Round 6, Pick 44 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
