The war room fell hard for Caedan Wallace, and it showed at slot 161: 52 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A F, plain and simple.
So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. However the rest shakes out, McKinstry at that price is a win they earned.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a true top target at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 16 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 26th pick they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 27 they get a potential shutdown corner, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 48th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Renardo Green in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at pick No. 92 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had Kris Abrams-Draine higher than Round 3, Pick 35, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Blake Fisher in the 99th overall pick, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Javon Baker in the 107th pick, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in slot 108, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Isaac Guerendo in No. 120 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Isaiah Davis in pick 125 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They went early on Brennan Jackson in pick No. 141, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They liked Kamal Hadden enough to skip the value, taking him in the 154th overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. at No. 158 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Caedan Wallace well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
AJ Barner at Round 5, Pick 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy bit of business in pick 172, where Walter Rouse graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on Trente Jones, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steele Chambers at the 183rd pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
M.J. Devonshire in Round 6, Pick 23 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Myles Cole at par in the 199th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Erick All in pick No. 200 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Joe Milton III in slot 204. A need, and now a little less of one.
A big swing on KT Leveston at No. 224, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
