They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Caedan Wallace, 69 picks early at Round 5, Pick 8. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here.
They banked enough surplus on Newton to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jayden Daniels. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
In the 26th overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick No. 27 they get a No. 1 receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Circle this one: Dallas Turner at the 47th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jer'Zhan Newton at Round 2, Pick 25 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Renardo Green at pick 70 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Trey Benson a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Max Melton in pick No. 96 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They talked themselves into Theo Johnson at No. 106, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; Kamren Kinchens at Round 4, Pick 7 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking Austin Booker in the 109th pick is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy little value on Blake Fisher in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
