The Giants put a flag in the ground for Anim Dankwah, 36 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Jayden Daniels gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits.
Getting Maye where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The veteran additions, Kenny Clark chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 26th pick they get the face of the franchise, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 27 with a little surplus value in Brian Thomas Jr.. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Drake Maye in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in the 39th overall pick, where Terrion Arnold graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Kool-Aid McKinstry at No. 47 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 58th pick, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Javon Bullard in the Round 3 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Cooper Beebe was the payoff at pick No. 89. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Gabriel Murphy in slot 90 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Zak Zinter at pick 91 that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Brenden Rice in No. 104, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took MarShawn Lloyd at par in Round 4, Pick 7, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Cole Bishop in the 126th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Isaac Guerendo in the 141st overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Mekhi Wingo all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Anthony Gould went about where he belonged in slot 166. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value with a capital V on Walter Rouse in the 183rd pick, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Steele Chambers. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Trey Knox at No. 212 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reach for Jordan Magee in pick 236; a little patience would have been rewarded. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A real head-scratcher, Anim Dankwah in Round 7, Pick 21 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Taulia Tagovailoa well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
