The trade table was where it all came apart. The Giants shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
They will need Gould to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Sainristil. The Giants paired the rookies with proven help, Luke Fortner leading the way.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They did well to land Jared Verse in the 14th pick, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kool-Aid McKinstry at slot 39. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bo Nix at the Round 2 slot is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Fair-plus on J.J. McCarthy, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Chop Robinson in slot 51 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Troy Franklin was still sitting there in pick 60, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Max Melton at the 70th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Mike Sainristil all the way to pick No. 108, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They let Will Shipley come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 17. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on Cole Bishop, who had no business lasting to the Round 4 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They read the board right and Sataoa Laumea was the payoff at the 131st pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Brennan Jackson at No. 134 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Anthony Gould at pick 140 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A conviction pick on Cody Schrader at Round 5, Pick 6 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a wide receiver like Johnny Wilson reach No. 149 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Marist Liufau. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Good price on Dallin Holker in pick No. 162, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A quiet steal in the 175th overall pick: Kamal Hadden for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Jordan Jefferson in the 185th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Josh Proctor at slot 235 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
