The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Giants reached some 138 spots for Austin Reed, and value like that does not grow back. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Jayden Daniels gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits.
The Smith pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
In the 16th pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Laiatu Latu slipping to pick No. 21 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get protection for the quarterback at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick 30 they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Nubin at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Malachi Corley at pick 54, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Braden Fiske enough to skip the value, taking him in the 70th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Cade Stover at par in pick No. 93, which is nothing to complain about. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
Jaylen Wright at Round 4, Pick 8 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
They went early on Renardo Green in No. 140, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Javon Baker in the 157th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Fair-plus on Theo Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Andru Phillips in the Round 5 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Braelon Allen at pick No. 160 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Javion Cohen at the 161st pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Austin Booker. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ainias Smith in No. 170, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A cornerback of that caliber at Round 6, Pick 3 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They did well to land Roger Rosengarten in the 185th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Jaylin Simpson at slot 188 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jared Wiley well ahead of where he belonged. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Steele Chambers. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Braiden McGregor at the 206th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Christian Jones slid further than he should have, and No. 222 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Gabe Hall in slot 224. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good price on Jawhar Jordan in the Round 7 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Taulia Tagovailoa in pick 241 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
