Whoever sat across the table from the Jets should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Fields. They will need Roush to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
It is not that Styles is a bad player; it is that the Jets had louder needs to answer first. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Sonny Styles and all.
Pick-by-Pick
Arvell Reese slipping to the 16th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
In pick No. 18 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, safety and other spots to take Sonny Styles, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Chris Johnson at the 33rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Value with a capital V on Brandon Cisse in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Gennings Dunker at par in slot 49, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Sam Roush. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They robbed the room for Malachi Fields here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, DeMonte Capehart at No. 140 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They liked Taylen Green enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 179. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Latrell McCutchin Sr. went about where he belonged in pick 228. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kaden Wetjen at Round 7, Pick 26 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
