Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Jets spent pick 210 on Eric Gentry, a name most had 146 spots down the list. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
The Washington Jr. pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. It is not that Styles is a bad player; it is that the Jets had louder needs to answer first. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had Arvell Reese higher than slot 16, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They bypassed pressing needs at safety to take Sonny Styles, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Kenyon Sadiq at pick 29 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Denzel Boston at par in the 33rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Lee Hunter. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Treydan Stukes still on the board at pick No. 103. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose tight end. Oscar Delp in pick 111 leaves safety for later.
They robbed the room for Mike Washington Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on George Gumbs Jr. in No. 140, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Cole Payton at slot 163, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Aamil Wagner at the 180th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Eric Gentry in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Eli Heidenreich at pick No. 228 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Terion Stewart at Round 7, Pick 26 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Adam Randall this early at pick No. 246. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
