Nobody had Jaylon Hutchings this high, and it is not close. The Cowboys reached 124 spots to get him at No. 242. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Jackson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Zach Frazier at slot 56 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Ray Davis in the Round 3 slot, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jordan Jefferson in the 173rd pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on JD Bertrand at the 213th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jha'Quan Jackson in pick No. 231 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylon Hutchings this early at the 242nd pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
