Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jay Higgins got past him. The Dolphins do not have to explain a thing at No. 224.
The cost of the Wedig reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a disruptor off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nick Emmanwori in the 48th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They took Luke Kandra at par in pick 98, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mason Taylor in the 114th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 133 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach the Round 5 slot and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Jaeden Roberts went about where he belonged in slot 154. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Jay Higgins in Round 7, Pick 8 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Trey Wedig at pick 231 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Graham Mertz in slot 252 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
