The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Dolphins watched Tahj Brooks slide 120 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
Reaching for Mertz left real value on the table behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
In No. 29 they get a ballhawk on the back end, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Steal is underselling it; Jihaad Campbell at the 76th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Jake Majors still on the board at pick No. 114. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Mason Taylor at slot 133 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Rylie Mills in Round 5, Pick 12 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in pick 154: Hayden Conner for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Graham Mertz at the 224th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They robbed the room for Tahj Brooks here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
Garrett Dellinger in pick 252 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
