The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Emery Jones Jr., taking him 51 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Milroe. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid a round early for Isaiah Bond in No. 38, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Trey Amos at slot 44 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ozzy Trapilo this early at pick 69. The roster fit checks out.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 77th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Danny Stutsman in Round 4, Pick 4 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jalen Milroe at pick No. 145 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Circle this one: Ollie Gordon II at No. 219 is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Jordan Hancock at Round 7, Pick 4 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A real head-scratcher, Bryson Nesbit in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
