After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Raiders committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 26 they get their guy under center for the next decade, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Byron Murphy II at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They let Rod Moore come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 13. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Max Melton at the 112th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Javion Cohen at par in pick 140, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They jumped the gun on LaDarius Henderson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Curtis Jacobs a notch or two before his time. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Blake Watson at No. 234 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
