Start where it matters. The Raiders took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
If McCarthy pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Puni at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a passer to set the clock by, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Nothing to complain about; Tyler Guyton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Newton. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dominick Puni at the Round 4 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the 150th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Gabe Hall in No. 190, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Blake Watson at pick 234 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
